Cubic zircon is an artificially prepared mineral that is very widely embedded in jewelry due to its resemblance to diamond. Its hardness is 8.5 on the Mohs scale (diamond has 10) and the refractive index of light is 1.93-1.98 (diamond has 2.42). Compared to a diamond, it refracts light a little less, but even so, thanks to its relatively high refractive index and especially its significantly lower price, it is popularly used as a cheaper substitute for diamonds.
